Business loan calculator

Work out what a short-term business loan really costs, using the figures from your own offer.

Enter the rate from your written offer to see the result.

An estimate only, using simple monthly calculations. Your loan documents set out the actual figures.

How to use the calculator

Short-term business loans are judged on total cost, not on the rate alone. A loan with a lower rate and higher fees can cost more over six months than one with a higher rate and lower fees. Put the figures from each written offer into the calculator and compare the totals side by side.

  1. Loan amount — the amount you'll borrow, including any fees being added to the loan.
  2. Term — how many months until your exit: the sale, refinance or payment that clears the loan.
  3. Rate and fees — copy them from the offer. If you don't have an offer yet, ask us for one.
  4. Interest treatment — paid monthly or capitalised into the loan.

Reading the result

The monthly figure tells you what you need from cash flow each month (zero if interest is capitalised). The total cost is everything you'll pay on top of the amount borrowed. The payout at exit is the figure your sale or refinance needs to cover. If the payout is uncomfortably close to what the exit will bring in, borrow less or extend the term — and read our guide to business loan exit strategies.

Calculator questions

Why doesn't the calculator show your rate?

Because there isn't one rate. Each loan is priced on its security, size, term and risk. Enter the rate and fees from any written offer you have — ours or anyone else's — to see the true total cost.

What's the difference between capitalised and monthly interest?

With monthly interest you pay interest each month and repay the principal at the end. With capitalised interest nothing is paid monthly; interest is added to the balance and repaid with the loan at the exit. Capitalised loans cost slightly more in total because interest accrues on interest.

Should I include fees?

Yes. Establishment, legal and discharge costs (and valuation fees, if another lender charges them — we never order valuations) can make a real difference on a short loan. Comparing total cost, not just the rate, is the only fair comparison.
